This piece was written and read on WordsWithWings-the radio show just after the 2014 Grammy Awards. In celebration of the United States Supreme Court standing up for all Americans giving us the right to marry whomever we love, respect, enjoy and choose to spend our lives with, I thought it was worth revisiting. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who gave our friends and our children the rights that always should have been theirs, and a special thanks to Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Mary Lambert, Madonna and Queen Latifah for the amazing Grammy moment.
On Love and Life
And now I’m thinking about love and life.
The Grammy Awards was amazing. Yes the music, Yes the personalities and Yes the weddings. 33 couples; gay, straight, and of diverse heritage, a representation of everybody the way it should be because it is love and love is to be shared and celebrated and this union of two people is extraordinary and needs to be available to everyone everywhere, including Russia and North Korea and Utah and Texas.
It is a scientific fact that we are empathic beings, we do just love and feel for each other and as our family has expanded to include the world. Which, by the way, we are just now realizing and has always been, because we share the same mitochondrial DNA of the same woman in Africa and the same y-chromosomal man. Every one of us alive today share the same ancestors, the proverbial Adam and Eve. Though they may be composites of contemporaries of their time and they may never have married or copulated, somebody then did and we share their DNA.
Every human alive today is related to every other human alive today, and now that you know that is a fact- didn’t you already know it – isn’t this a moment of realization rather than instruction? Of course I’m related to you and you to me and everyone else, so now that we share this common realization – could we please stop killing each other.
En-peace and love,
